The fifty states of the United States of America, commonly known as the American States and every state is a federal republic comprising fifty states and a federal district. The original thirteen states were the former English colonies on the Atlantic coast and part of the Native American lands in what is now the Northeast, Southeastern, and South Central regions of the country. Since then, many territories of the United States have been acquired by purchase, treaty, or conquest by the United States between 1789 and 1898.
